There are probably various reasons, but the appearance and existence of their mascot character, Birdie, seems to have been a major factor.Birdie was designed by Mike Salisbury, who lives in Venice, California. Most people probably don´t know his name, but his resume is amazing. (See ://www.mikesalisbury.net) He has handled art direction for numerous major companies, including Michael Jackson´s Off the Wall (1977), Levi´s, Volkswagen, Honda, and others. Looking at those works, you´ll find many that you recognize. It was 1964. I was working at Surfer magazine at the time, and my job was to finish the advertising copy. Birdwell was one of the clients, and one day they asked me to create their logo, so I went to a meeting at their factory in Santa Ana. That´s where I came up with Birdie, combining a bird and a surfer, drawn in black and red. The mascot character that Mike Salisbury came up with has a mohawk (?!?) in the shape of a surfboard fin on its head, and it quickly became known among surfers. Everyone fell in love with Birdie at first sight. From here, Birdwell´s rise began.In my personal opinion,I like Birdwell products that are not collaborations and have worn several items. The logo is cute, and I think it´s suitable for everyday wear, not just as surf pants.
